Mood Disorders (Becoming Detached from the Cultural World)

Page four paragraph four in Culture jam explains how humans are becoming more detached from the natural world. It gives examples of how most people don't even know why the sky is blue or cannot remember the last time they smelled wild skunk cabbage. It also talks about how we as families are becoming less engaged in story times. In early years Native Americans told stories of the moon, epic battles, hunting experiences, and the stars. Instead we are now becoming more reliant on television and technology to tell us stories. Examples of this would be television shows such Jerry Springer, Oprah, or Maury. Instead of families telling stories with one another they now gather around the television and stray from that inner culture being and substitute technology as a form of story telling.

So the question I ask is. Is the fact that humans are straying from the "warmth" of mother earth an accepted fact of evolution, or is it a serious problem that needs to be addressed?

  1. I really like your question David. Have we evolved past a need for nature? Is it acceptable that we no longer tell stories or know the stories of our families and sometimes our own past? While it is certain that we have made "progress" as a nation, what have we abandoned in the process?

  2. I completely agree, like discussed in class. This seems that the human race is tearing nature apart. Although, what can we really do about this? It is terrible, although think about it. I completely agree that technology seems to be massively affecting society, and it won't stop anytime soon.

  3. Yes I like what your saying. I think its becoming a problem and the more technology advances the more people are going to become shells. I don't know what could be done thought to stop how technology can make a person a mindless shell.

  4. In my opinion it is both. Not only have we accepted the fact that we have "strayed" from the warmth of of mother nature, but we also have gotten ourselves into some serious trouble by doing so. Most of the people I hang out with love spending time outside doing some form of something that lets you enjoy the outdoors. Yet, there are many folks out there who do not share this same affinity. These are the people who are being talked about here, and there many people who are like this. It shame that this is case, but it is and it probably always will be. Some people may look at this as a problem and they are definitely right, but one could also look at it as that's just that much more of mother nature that we will have to ourselves.

  5. This is in response to shannons post. I guess that we as humans have evolved past a need for nature but In retrospect we do rely on mother earth to provide us with food, air, and water. The human age is constantly evolving and as it does of course it will change how we interact with one another. As we are progressing as a nation we are abandoning cultural values but i believe that that is just a fact of life. So to answer my own question. I do believe that it is an accepted fact. Primarily because we will also evolve and have new better things. For instance why sit down as a family and tell a story when you can press a button to turn on the television and have someone tell you without even moving.
